The scalloped deep plate inspired by 17th century Japanese Kakiemon palette and design,
depicting a colorful long-tailed pheasant perched on a turquoise hollow rock
sided by a blue branch issuing turquoise leaves and bright yellow and iron red flowers,
all above grass represented by turquoise brush strokes and tiny iron red flowers;
within a "wet blue" lobed ground, with quite fine gilding of leaf sprays alternating with trellis diapering
Conditon : Excellent, with only very minor scratches to the enamels;
gilt in remarkable condition, and apparently very well care for;
expected light "mottling" to the wet blue ground under strong light; appropriate footrim wear
Notes :
This Kakeimon design used at Worcester from the 1750s,
a related design appearing on Chelsea, ane a further version appearing on Vauxhalls porcelains.
The pattern appears in three different forms :
on lobed plates and teawares, c1765, with plain ground within a brown rim;
within an underglaze wet blue rim;
and within panels divided by deep underglaze blue bands.
The connection between this pattern and Sir Joshua Reynolds is unclear,
although tradition holds that a set of the pattern belonged to
the well known British 18th century painter, Sir Joshua Reynolds.
